Just wanted to give the group an update. I was able to obtain a replacement
part from Paul, (aka Mr_RTTY) and found some time Monday to make the
necessary repair. Lots of fun with c-clips, springs and linkages, but it's
all back together and running great! The spacing is now consistently smooth.
Of course my ITTY decoder is now on the blink so I have nothing to print.
Parts are on the way.

Next step is to find someone to media blast the M28 cabinet. What
"authorized" colors did they originally come in? Might be tough to find
something "living room friendly". LOL.

Found it!  Problem is, it's what you might call a hardware failure. There's
a bracket that supports the pivot that plays a part in positioning the type
box that fatigued and broke away from its fastener. It's semi-captive
because of where it's buried but it appears that when the type box is
required to line up for B,G,O, the angle is such that play in the mechanism
is at it's max and the whole type box moves out of alignment. For the other
rows it's either over center or under center of it's pivot.

Of course it's in one of those 'how am I going to get to it' spots and is a
multi-function part.

look at the position of these letters you will find that they are all in the
rightmost row of the typebox when viewed from the front of the machine.
Note that D is one row to the left of B.  Tells me that the typebox is slow
in positioning to the rightmost row or held back somehow.  I wonder if there
is a little binding or something that is slowing down the positioning of the
typebox.  Make sure that you are not using too heavy a lubricant.  Oil not
grease and a light oil at that.
