I forwarded that message to a friend who is a fire alarm equipment buff,
and here's what he replied.

Fascinating.  Had you sent me this two weeks ago, I wouldn't have
known what it was (well, I mean, how the fire service used it).
However ...  I recently stumbled upon this LAFD training film from
1940.  http://youtu.be/KPiUgqblFcw?t=7m  The link is queued up to just
before the point they get a teletype message (but the whole film is
pretty neat).

Except it's not the same model.  :-)

The other eBay item in the message, the advertisement, is from a
manufacturer I've never heard of.  Judging by the images, it *must*
have been a licensee of Gamewell since their equipment appears
identical.
