12s had to phase them out because Teletype quit making parts for them.
So the hams got them, and they are not very nice machines for ham radio.
Lots of RF noise, which was not such a problem on VHF but was severe
on HF. And they were made from typewriter parts, so were less durable
than the later machines - altho that might not have been a problem in
the fairly light duty hams gave them. But mostly they were probably
just worn completely out. I was given a couple of Model 12 typing
units by Ray Morrison and ended up tossing them out because the bearings
were beyond worn out.
