Weighing in on this,
I use a 32 ASR for RTTY. It does not have auto CR and LF as some 28's do. I run it with the cover off now and that allows me to manually return the carriage and advance the paper when needed. The paper and tape roll are mounted on the wall directly behind the 32.
The biggest problem I have is my Hal ST-5000 has a 3 or 4 second delay before it recognizes the receive RTTY signal and starts printing. I have to run it with the Auto switch in OFF when I actually make a contact. Messy copy but I dont miss anything. Down and dirty but it works. My pic on QRZ still shows the nice 32 ASR with cover on!
In a contest, most glass RTTY guys are making QSO's too fast to bother with a real Teletype but sometimes they become interested in the novelty of contacting a real TTY.
