The rollers were made from a 1970s miracle material- polyurethane. It
can decompose almost overnight into goo, greatly accelerated by moisture
and heat. I have had fairly good results using choke and carburetor
cleaner to remove the goo, but it isn't easy and the solvent won't
usually actually dissolve the goo. It does cause it to release some of
it's stickness and turn to "buggers" that can be picked and scraped off
the parts. It takes a lot of time and patience, but I have cleaned a few
of the machines. I re-covered the roller assemblies with hose from auto
and appliance stores, and it works well. Wear old clothes and glove
when doing this, the crud stains skin badly and is pretty much
impossible to remove from clothing.
