Larry:

Sounds like what you are describing is a "place holder" station
keeping the frequency available for its' own use. Common practice
some years ago, especially with some of those older French Navy
stations using RATT (RTTY), and others using CW ("Caller" tapes).

Your reference to Mc is interesting. I am seeing similar references
to the old term on other lists as well from time to time (instead of
Mhz), which is sort of refreshing. The old ways were the best ways
I think, LOL
