Also in 1964, I was in the Boy Scouts. My dad and I stopped in
to the Gardena Department Store and went to the "Scouting"
corner to get a Radio Merit Badge book, and hopefully the
receiver I wanted. A 2 tube regenerative receiver. At the time
the list price was $14.95. My dad looked at it and said, "That
costs too much, and you'll just fu** it up." (Thanks dad.)
45 years later, after I moved to the middle of nowhere, I spotted
one, brand new, unassembled in the box in the antique store
around the corner from my shop. I didn't have the money on me
at the time so I asked the store owner to set it aside for me.
The next week I walked in and was told, "Sorry, we sold it."
Two weeks later, I'm sitting at the dining table in the living room
and after having made a pig of my self for my birthday, my wife
says, "I got you something for your birthday" and hands me a
box. I figured, from the size of it, it's a shirt or something.
Surprise, it was that Boy Scout Explorer two tube radio kit.
Much as I like to whip through a project, I fought all of my urges
and managed to make it last for two weeks before I was ready
to turn it on. The first station I heard was WBAP, 820 AM, out
of Ft. Worth.
I just sat there with an idiot grin on my face and thought to my
self, "Fu** you dad."
Funny thing, although having been licensed since 1967, that
was the first time I ever played with a regenerative radio.
