I fried one of the Black Box gadgets, too.
By the way, there's always my "poor man's RS232 to loop converter"
that just uses a good old fashioned TTY polar relay.
Wire the relay's coils in series and connect them to your PC's
RS232 RX line and GND. Then key your loop with the relay's contacts.
Works every time...

I just said 65 V, I think Jack's right about it being 30 V.
I remember frying the first one I hooked up to the Lorenz.
My next attempt was using the black box converter to drive a mercury wetted
sealed relay.
