1206 parts are indeed, easy to use. They can be readily soldered by hand, with very good results.
KB1GTT any myself have also used a homebrew Black and Decker IR toaster oven fitted with a thermistor and a large solid-state relay to control the heating cycle (ramp up, solder time, cool down, etc) under software control with a USB link. We have also done double-sided SMD boards with this rig.
But, if you completely populate a board, and then find a misplaced or poorly soldered part, it's more difficult to rework after mass reflow.
Individually soldering SMD parts by hand is much better for ham radio projects. My PIC-a-STAR transceiver uses a lot of surface-mount parts, and it works nicely.
