Back when I used to do this regularly....
The obvious, clean, oil free, no dust, fingerprints etc.
Hose on a fairly thick coat.
Walk away, go have a cigarette.
Come back, hose on a second coat.
Set it in a pre-heated oven at 180-200F
Go watch TV or find something else to waste an hour with.
Remove from oven and let cool.
Let it sit over night to properly harden up and set.

Nice tight uniform wrinkles.

Like all things that required that I wait, it used to drive me nuts.
