[GreenKeys] Lost in history ? How was paper tape oiled ? ...

yes. I knew this too but the previous owner of these tapes did not :(  So, I inherited the goo.  In most cases it is deeply impregnated into the paper.  It's not practical to scrape or break it off without damaging the tape for example.

I've brainstormed some solutions like an ozone emitter thinking that would further degrade the rubber without wrecking the paper but I have not tried this yet.
