Encouraged by finding the manual on bitsavers for the SCM-311 I decided
to have another look at it this weekend. I found that the carriage
return clutch was jammed. I pulled apart the clutch and found the
clutch pad (a cork-like material) had become sticky, balled up and
disintegrated. I cleaned up the sticky residue off of the metal parts,
and removed what was left of three cork washers that probably act as
shock absorbers on the back of the clutch plate and carriage return
drum.
I will need to replace the clutch plate "cork" pad. Does anyone know
of a source of this material? The clutch plate "cork" pad is shaped
like a washer 1.5 inch OD, 1.125" ID, and about .05" thick and is glued
to the clutch plate. I could cut one out of a sheet of cork (or
rubber?) if I could find the right material and the correct thickness.
The manual on Bitsavers doesn't show the detail for this clutch. In
the exploded view on page 4D-032 it sits inside the carriage return drum
(19) and pulls against the pulley (22) when the clutch coil is
energized. It may be an integral part of the carriage return drum
("pulley" p/n 66028A) which I did find by googling and came up with:
NSN P/N 5815007287077, 66028A, PULLEY, 82423, KLEINSCHMIDT INC which
would lead me to believe there may be some stock in a military warehouse
somewhere....
I'll probably have better luck trying to repair rather than replace this
part unless anyone in the group knows a source. Helpful advice would
be appreciated.

I have the RO model. I picked it up about 1980 from a guy that gave me
a truck load of stuff. I pulled it out of storage a couple years ago
and cleaned it up (mouse nest) to see what I could do with it. At the
time I wasn't able to find a manual so I traced out the boards and found
6 data lines and the strobe on the interface but wasn't able to make it
print. After going through my storage I found what looks like a
serial interface with a UART chip that I believe goes with this printer.
I don't know if the previous owner ever got it working, but now that I
have the service manual I think I'll give it a try. Any advice would
be appreciated.

ran into this by accident. Does anyone remember it?
I forgot SCM made the latter "Klienschmidt"
I worked on several of these in a "sensitive" Comm station in the late
70's
