Les,
At the very bottom of John's Aetheric Message webpage, he mentions that the
original opto HSR-312L is obsolete and offers the Omron G3VM-401B as a pin
compatible replacement which has been successfully used by Steve Garrison.

Bob:
Is there a current part that is a better substitute for the HV opto
isolator, even if a PCB redesign would be required? (single part or
multiple parts)

Hi

Just a comment on that board:

In the configuration shown, the opto is rated to 250V. There is a drop in
part (the HSR412L) that is rated to 400V. All of
them are listed as "obsolete". You will be paying scalper prices for them.
Even so I'd go for the 412 rather than the 312.

With a 125V loop supply, the magnets fly back above 250V to ground pretty
fast. Neon bulb pairs across the magnets light up
pretty well ..
