I've used Kroil for years. Great stuff, and smells really nice, too.. ;-)

If you do a little research, the oft-cited homebrew penetrant was actually
a 50/50 mix of Acetone and Power Steering Fluid. The test fluid was meant
to be ATF, but the tech accidentally grabbed a bottle of PSF from the store
and that's what was actually used for the testing. Each has its own profile
of additives, but ATF and PSF are otherwise very similar fluids.

Both are a highly-refined straight 20W oil blended for dual-use as a
hydraulic working fluid and bearing & gear lubricant.
