My father (94) grew up in Northern VA just outside D.C. in the 1920's in 
a house served by a telephone party-line, with
phone 'number' of "831F12", where the "12" on the end meant "one short, 
two long" (cranks of the magneto).

He said when he called a girl for a date, he had to get the proposition 
out within the first two sentences, because so many people would pick up 
on the party-line to eavesdrop that he couldn't hear what her answer was!
