There is actually an old terminal and protector box on the side of
my house. It was in service until a few years ago when the drop was
replaced. There is now both a POTS phone and a DSL line coming in but
the old box is still there used as a junction for the new wiring. This
one has the long fuses and carbon protector. It was probably installed
when the house was moved from its original location about 1951. Such
moves were common in Los Angeles because freeway construction often went
through neighborhoods where the houses were worth more than the land
making them worth moving. The house itself was evidently built about
1921. No sign of the original phone installation. The area it was in
(and is still in) was one of the first automatic (dial) installations in
the city so it probably never had a wall type phone. The first house
we owned in L.A. had a 200 series wasp-waist phone with the ringer in a
box on the wall. Replaced soon after we bought the place with a 500
series phone.
