That was a Pagefax.
You will of heard of Rupert Murdoch.
In the 1960s he started his empire by publishing the Australian
This was the first national newspaper produced daily.
The editorial office was in Canberra and every night he flew
mattes to Sydney & Melbourne.
The problem was that Canberra often fogged in and so no mattes
were sent.
The solution was to install Pagefaxes in the three locations.
At that time I worked for the company that represented
Muirhead in Australia. I spent a cold May/June in Canberra
(it snows there!) on the installation in 1966
and even met the great man.
At that time he was a happy camper!
Don't ask me for details, it was almost 50 years ago!
I do remember that it used a dedicated high speed line.
It also used some "new" (for the time) little black
bugs called ICs!
