Actually, the AP used two different sizes of nameplates.
The most common was 9 5/8" x 4 7/8" with the words
ASSOCIATED
PRESS
engraved in two lines.
There was another version that is 9 3/4" x 3 1/2". This was typically
used earlier. It has the words
THE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
engraved in two lines.
Both signs are drilled to mount in the holes typically occupied by the
copy holder. Since the signage was generally used on RO machines, the
copy holders were not present.
In my experience, the small tag on the upper left on the front of the
machine simply said Teletype Corporation.
Ed, I have one of each of the signs. I do not want to part with them,
but if you know of someone that might want to use them as models for
making replicas, perhaps we can work something out. I would imagine
someone with one of those nameplate engraving machines might be able to
make a pretty fair copy.
I used these signs on the dash of my car during the years I worked for
the AP (1966-1974)
