This subject came up here in 2013, and prompted me (then) to do a bit
of research into it (because my memory did not correspond to the
evidence at hand). The writeup is at:

http://circuitousroot.com/artifice/letters/characters/slashed-o/index.html

This includes some early documentation, and some different practices
(such as a "ticked" letter O (IBM 7090), center-dot letter O
(IBM 7030/Stretch), centerdot numeral '0' (Rabinow and US Army Ordnance),
and underscored letter O (Univac FLOW-MATIC)).

There has even been a scholarly article on the subject:

Bemer, R[obert] W. "Toward Standards for Handwritten Zero and Oh."
Communications of the ACM. Vol. 10, No. 8 (August, 1967): 513-518.

I need to go back now and add the evidence of the particular
examples cited in this new Greenkeys thread.

Regards,
David M.
