Bill,
It appears that no one has given you a short list of goals to manage as you read the “made-easy” document. I offer these to get you started:
The machine needs 60ma through its magnets to stop “running open”, that is to be stopped and wait for a character code to come along.
- figure out what terminal strip connections go to the magnets -with power off use an ohm meter (If the magnets are now connected to the TRS plug you have, the plug may be RED - for Receive.)
- Also figure out what connections go to the keyboard contacts. It could be that all the keyboard contacts are open, so use the ohm meter from both the moving and non-moving contacts of the keyboard to locate the terminal strip terminals.
- Now wire the keyboard and magnets in series (This establishes the “local” mode.) The loop current in the magnets of 60 ma keeps the machine from doing anything, when the current is interrupted then the magic happens.
- The two things in series, magnets and keyboard contacts, constitute your “loop”. Connect the loop to the terminal unit output - should be some 120 volts or so (with no loop connected) and provide 60 ma.
- Now with power applied, AND loop current of 60 ma, the machine should just sit there with the motor running. When you hit a key, the printer should print the character.
