A possible substitute for ribbon reinking is Bates numbering machine ink. It's liquid in a bottle rather than paste in a tube. Stamp pad ink is discouraged for the purpose because it is said to corrode metal type elements. I guess all the cash registers now use thermal paper, so they don't need ink.
