Hi Keith:
Shortly after Telegraph technology was in place people started looking into how get readable text from the system.

Stock market "tickers" worked by sending pulses where each pulse turned a type wheel one letter position.

The Dial Telegraph is a simple way of doing this and was the basis of some toys.

One of the last tickers was the WU 5A:

Another printer that works by moving the typewheel a letter/pulse at at time is the Teletype Monopulse Printer

The Dow Jones Broad Sheet News printer used pretty much the same technology as the stock tickers, except instead of
printing on a strip of paper it prints on a broad sheet of rolled paper.
