Brad,

Putting the machine in Line mode without a computer or the like what you describe is normal. Its called running open.

Does the print hammer strike the platen when you are in Line mode?

Does the carriage return (CR) return the carriage and the line feed work when you depress LF?

I think I gave you a typewheel chart earlier, but here it is a again. Quick check, CR is 1348 marking and LF is 2 and 4 marking or holes in the tape punch that corresponds. Read left to right from the front. A is 1 and 7 marking.

Put a length of tape in the tape punch and turn it on of course. Also a piece of paper in the platen. See if you are getting the characters that you type correctly. You can use the type punch to see if you are getting characters correctly.

You may be typing and printing correctly, just printing all the time.

No adjustments, just test and isolate.

Turning the motor fan backwards a little should not have a big effect on the machine.

Your 33 looks nice and clean and the motor and gears are quiet.

Visual, Visual, Visual. Sorry. Cant stress it enough.

Wayne

Oh and one other note… if I put the 33 in Line mode, it just endlessly and repeatedly does what you see there when I press a key in local mode.
