Western Union and the Creation of the American Corporate Order,
1845-1893
by Joshua D. Wolff
The failure of W.U. to recognize the value of the Bell patents is
one of the greatest business blunders in history. You may know that
Chester Carlson offered his copying machine patent to Kodak. They turned
it down. One of the directors, C.E.K.Mees, creator of the Kodak Research
Labs, said, "We are a chemical company and this is not a chemical
product". Carlson then took it to a small competitor, the Haloid
Company, who made primarily photo copying gear and the bought it and a
couple of years later became Xerox.
My reaction to Steve Jobs is that most of the queer stuff he did was
not necessary or productive. He may have alienated people who could have
been important contributors. However smart he may have been he must have
had a serious psychological problem. Unfortunately, people like that are
often successful in business.
