Thanks to all that responded both on list and offlist...

Oddly enough I do remember a pen register in a bell system gray metal
box with lid stashed here in storage. Kind of a funny thing... the
register has brass on it and looks old as is lacquered brass but
pristine and the gray box is as new as I remember... did not seem to be an
ANCIENT thing...
can anyone tell us more about what this was used for ? a dial pulse
counter?!?!? a secret agent recorder for numbers dialed?

We do have a Bunnel (SP?) pen register also in one of the displays...
but thought it used narrower tape...

We were asked if it was 11/16 for the wheatstone system measured
with crude tape measure tape fit between the 1/2 marks

Thanks much for the info and
please other info needed on the bell gray case regiester

Ed,

Samuel Morse's original Morse code system was mechanical and recorded
the dots and dashes with a pen on a strip of paper tape (aka "slip").
Originally a solenoid moved a pen down onto the paper to make the dots &
dashes. Later, the pen drew a continuous line showing dots and dashes.
Various widths of paper tape were used. Some of the very oldest ones
were at least an inch wide.

Lots of different widths were used for telegraph slips and printing
telegraph strip printers. You just have to find some equipment that it
fits into!

have fun,
