[GreenKeys] M14 Receiving Distributor

The recent discussion on the TT-21 got me wondering about the purpose of a
Receiving Distributor. Such a gadget could take in a serial signal and turn
it into a parallel 5-wire output. Was it also used to act as a serial
signal regenerator somehow? or as ??

I am a M28 guy and I guess the equivalent is an LRS Receiving Selector?
