[GreenKeys] Kleinschmidt morning sickness

I had a TT-100B/FG.

It had a problem: it worked fine when receiving data at
full speed (tape operation) but if someone was typing slow
enough it would sometimes mess up the characters. There was
no rhyme or reason to that.

I tried adjusting one of the trip pawls. I was not aware of
the maxim: "when you make an adjustment, turn the motor by hand
and make sure there isn't any binding". I turned the motor on and
stripped out one of the fiber gears. Fortunately one of the guys
had a TT-100B/FG for spare parts and I got a new gear and had to
R/R the main shaft.

While doing that, I realized what the problem was: there was a
compression spring against a felt washer. I immediately knew that
was what needed adjustment. I finished assembly, checked it over
and fired up the TT. It had the exact same problem as before I
worked on it. I now adjusted the compression spring. I checked
it by turning the motor by hand. Then I fired it up and ran some
fast and slow traffic to it. It worked perfectly.

SO: if you have a TT that needs to warm up, you might take a look
at the fiber gear on the main shaft and see if there is a spring
pushing against it. As I recall, it was threaded so that I was
able to make small adjustments to it.

DISCLAIMER: this was back in 1970. My remembrance might not be perfect...
