Congratulations Richard. Nice catch.
Doing a google image search, the picture has been identified as having
been taken in 1923.
As odd as it sounds, there ARE a few people that actually properly give
attributes to images rather than just cut and paste.
The "other thing" in the picture.
Appears to have 30 (perhaps 32) keys on it.
If so, it probably uses a variation of the LTRS/FIGS shift like a Teletype
machine to "re-use" 26 of the keyboard keys for two characters.
My suspicion is that it is a keyboard generated Morse Code sender.
