[GreenKeys] Static vs Dynamic IP addresses...

Hi
The other “secret” about the whole business side of things is that
the customer service and tech support on that side is *way* better
than on the consumer side of things. The guy who wants a static
IP may also want the tech support to know what a static IP is. Around
here, there is also a difference in the equipment they supply to each
side. Consumer side lets you buy your own gear. Business side is
strictly “what we supply you with”.
I’ve done things both ways over the years. The price delta for taking
the package of services from business to consumer was ~$300 ($500/mo
to ~$200/ mo) last time I switched over. That’s for TV, phone and internet
so not just the $45 charge for the block of static IP’s … The cloud guys will sell
me a lot of stuff for $45 a month.
So why bring this up? Amazon or any of the other cloud outfits will
happily rent you a fixed IP for next to nothing. You have to associate it
with something else on their cloud that does cost a bit. How much depends
on how fancy you want to be. You can then link (tunnel) from that instance to
your home system. This effectively gets you around all of the restrictions
that your local service provider puts on you. Just like the cable company,
they have various deals that might work. Getting it done for < $20/mo is not
impossible.
