[GreenKeys] Teletype M38ASR...

80 characters per line sounds right…I do recall the type was very hard to read.

Fortunately, the application was for long strings of numbers.

Bill Degnan has a 33 with smaller (narrower) size type wheel characters and smaller notches on the spacing ratchet. I think it is an 80 character per line unit. Maybe more.

I have only seen one other long time ago.

I had two 38ASR’s over the years and both were operational. As

Jim pointed out, the keyboard was terrible (as in the 37) and the

machine always ran like parts were ready to fly out of the case.

The 132 column idea was as goofy as the Model 43’s column

width (and associated tiny print).

There was a Model 33 option for “compressed type” that

emulated a 132 column width. Ma Bell sold them to a supermarket

chain that used them for inventory control/ordering. Never

saw one anywhere else.

Hi all!

Just noticed Jack's comments on the Teletype M38ASR...

I didn't. have much exposure to these macines, I did see

one in the Toronto, Ont. branch of Teletype Corp'n.,

and sort of studied it a little, between classes on the M40

product line...

I found it kind of interesting, basically an "Upscaled" M33,

upper/lower case, with a 6 row (Vertical) typewheel,

two colour printing, and extra computer related functions...

I haven't seen one since, I think they were probably low

production...

Possibly some of the GK members have one, and wud like

to share their experiences with the group...

The Model 38 is rarely discussed/mentioned, so it wud

be nice to hear some comments from the owners...

Apparently one of the common operational drawbacks

was the long, (Relatively) speaking, CR time...

I am assuming there wud probably have to be a couple of

rubout characters after the CR/LF function to properly allow

carriage return travel time and dashpot settling...

What say you all?

TKS & Cheers!
