TKS to Jim and Jack for their comments on the 38's...
I don't. expect more than a handful or so of GK members
wud have one of these machines...
It is interesting tho, to look back on the engineering
efforts put in to developing this machine...
When I think back some years ago, I believe the Holiday Inn
hotel chain used a "RO" version of the '38 in their own enclosure
to print reservation forms...
Any one know approx how many of these were built?
Our company never pursued this product line, but only
offered sprocket feed private line M33ASR's as computer
I/O devices...
Interestingly, the discussion of the "Compressed" print for
the M33's brought back some shop memories...
We did receive an order for a quantity of sprocket feed 33's
that were to be modified for "Narrow" print, I think 12 char.
to the inch...
I believe the result was a 96 character line length...
As far as I can recall, it used a "NU" typewheel...
It also involved in addition to replacing the typewheel,
a change in the spacing ratchet, and possibly the
carriage spacing belt and drive pulley...
Perhaps Wayne mite comment, on the above info,
as I forgot to take my memory pill today...
However, I can tell you this with certainty,
the typewheel positioning adjustments, vertical
and rotary, have to be rite on the money!
The characters are so close together, no room for
marginal adjustments...
I was lucky, the 33's were straight from Teletype and right out
of the box...
I wud never want to install a compressed print kit on
a "Tired" or well worn unit!
Thanks for listening!
Cheers!
Ken
