Most commercial & military messaging (land line & radio) was done from
tape. All (?) perforators have a character counter with a bell and/or
light that turns on after about 70 characters so that the typist knows
to enter the CR-LF characters.

The automatic CR-LF at the end of the line on a page printer was only
needed on RTTY circuits in case the CR-LF characters were lost in a fade
or QRM.

Have fun,
