[GreenKeys] Why has the '#' symbol been called a number sign, pound sign, and now 'hashtag'?

Yes Dave, the youngsters that use Facebook etc only know it as hash-tag.

Those that did computer programming like Fortran? might have come across it 
as some kind of special operator.
like @#  -  No doubt someone more computer literate than me can explain what 
it does.

The only people likely to call it "hashtag" are the youngsters and their
stupid social media; I'll bet none of 'em knows how to have a real
conversation.
