This has been a fascinating diversion from the usual Teletype stuff.
What I wanted to understand was how the tape is punched on the Morse
code side.
This is explained quite well in the Boehme keying head manual.

My next question was how do they do the 3:1 dash/dot spacing.
It's actually 2:1.
Dot + one dot-blank (spacer) = 2 baud.
Dot + dot + dot + one dot-blank (spacer) = 4 baud.
Reading the "how does this work" for the Hallicrafters HA-5 keyer
makes this a bit more intuitive.
Hallicrafters you say? Yes, I bought four of them over the past year.
I've always wanted one, then I ended up with three more. Of course
neither the 1st and 2nd ones worked. So I had to learn the what, how
and why in the process of repairing them.
And interesting as it is to see how it's done with a pair of multi-
vibrators, it's even more interesting to see how it's done mechanically.
A special thank you to Richard Dillman for posting this originally.
