R-390A's don't cost thousands of dollars (maybe three quarters of a
thousand for a very nice one), but economy in your project is well within
reach.
The RBB and RBC receivers are octal tube based radios of the 40's and early
50's (I am likely only approximate here), and are really wonderful radios.
Some of them are definitely rack mount. Some were not in rack cases but in
table top cases. None of the ones shown on the website below are rack
mount ones, it seems.
