The 35 is an 8-level Model 28.heavy duty, 24-hour-operation rated.
The 32/33 line really was originally

considered to be "throw away".sort of like the good old Teletype
Model 26. 

 

one feature of the 35ASR that Teletype finally got right.they put
"hand holds" in the back

so the thing could be moved!

You might look at the two Teletypes, M33 and M35, and sort of
equate them to a Ford Ranger pickup

truck and a Ford F-250 pickup truck.  Both can haul some 'stuff',
and top speed might not be

greatly different between them.  The F-250 can haul more at any
one time, than the Ranger.  Both

can get one or two people from Point "A" to Point "B" in roughly
the same time, on the same roads.

The ride of the F-250 might be a bit smoother, but not much.

 

The model 33 was jokingly called a "Mattel" Teletype when first
introduced.  The Model 33 ASR could

punch and read tapes, just like the Model 35.  The Model 35 is a
well engineered, durable and tough

machine.  Designed to have a much longer (better) MTBF than the
33.  The 33s were designed for light-

duty service, although they surprised the hell out of some
Teletype engineers.

 

One of my friends who worked for Michigan Bell Telephone told me
that the 32 and 33 models were 

designed to be 'throw aways', and likely not repaired.  At some
point, however, requests started

coming in from the field for 'repair parts' and replacement parts
for them.  Some were not buying into

the 'disposable' concept.   

 

There may be other opinions come in, but I think I covered things
fairly well.  I used the Fords

only because I am a Ford retiree.  Other brand names will provide
the same analogy.

Thanks for the explanation, Ralph, that hadn't occurred to me at
all.    I'm in IL and it would be vastly pressing my luck to even
suggest one of my New England buddies haul such a thing to Dayton
next year ;-)   But now I'll know how to act if something should
come up on Craigslist somewhere close to my neighborhood.

As long as I have floor for dopey questions, let me ask one more:
Why is the model 35 so much bigger than the 33?    What's in all
that extra space, as it looks like the same tape punch/reader is
on the left, just not as compactly mounted, and I'd guess the
blank panel on the right could house a modem and dial keypad.  But
the ASR-33 had all that stuff in the much narrower form factor -
what am I missing?
