Steve,

The Teletype Corp. M17/Hellschreiber was sort of a cross between a FAX 
machine and a 5x7 dot matrix printer and lent itself to radio communication.

One of Edward Kleinschmidt's first patents was for a FAX machine in 
about 1900. He developed the M17 in 1930 for Teletype Corp.  But then, 
AT&T bought Teletype Corp to supply machines for their new TWX project 
and the M17 was shelved.

Sometime in the mid-late 1930s, strange radio signals were heard from 
Germany and the US Government asked the Teletype Corp if they could 
produce a machine to copy the text. Kleinschmidt's M17 was pulled out of 
storage, improved, and put into production.

The AWA Museum has a prototype of the M17, labeled a "Radio Printer", 
see attachment. The most complicated part of this prototype was the 
inking ribbon, which with its ribbon reversal mechanism, was similar to 
the ribbon mechanism of the M14 & 15. In the production version of the 
M17, the inking was significantly simplified.
