Hey Nick -
Some comments on the photo you posted yesterday of State's RTTY gear,
from a current long-time employee. I forwarded him the link:
" That's a cool pic! That had to have been late 1940s. We started
using Model 28s relatively soon after they became available. Pain in
the ass for the communicators.... to send a classified telegram, they
had to:
1, type up the telegram, including the message routing, serial #, etc
and punch a clear text tape
2, run that tape through a reader, the data then went thru an
encrypter which punched a second (encrypted) tape
3, Punch a third tape where the op would have to type the plain text
Western Union or NTS routing on the header, and run the second tape
thru to combine all of that
4, Run the tape thru the live circuit to send the telegram.
Lots of opportunity for error..... "
