[GreenKeys] a fun bit of off-topic history -- weather kiosks

Here in Syracuse we have a 1960s interperatation of the weather kiosks,
just as maligned but very much a part of the city. When a tall office
building was put up as an urban renewal project, a tower was built on
top of the building with a large plastic paneled star on top. The tower
has lighted rings that form ladders on the four faces of the tower, and
large floodlight dot matrix displays at the base of the tower to display
temperature and time. The lighed rings chase up or down for rising or
falling temperature, and the star changes color to indicate the present
and forecast conditions. For many years, the temperature display was
driven by sensors at the building, but that has since been changed to
data from the National Weather Service which also keeps the clock
display accurate. For a short time, the temperature was presented
alternating between Celsius and Farenheiht because of the large number
of Canadian visitors. The building has changed hands a few times, and
there have been efforts to tear down the "Weather Star", but even with
it's quirks public support for it remains strong.
