Things like this were used in message numbering modules, for example, to
generate a short canned character sequence of channel identification and
message number.
Teletype Corp. although a subsidiary of Western Electric was not required
to use the parent company's parts. Automatic Electric was a popular
supplier of relays and stepping switches at Teletype - perhaps because
they were a company that needed to make sales to the world, so it was
easier to find what you needed from them than from W.E.
