Viewed from its fan end (rear of the machine), counterclockwise.
If the starting switch in the motor fails, it can start in
either direction. In that mode, it will run slow, not reaching
proper synchronous speed. If that's happening, buy a new motor
on eBay. There are four for sale right now. (Get a GE motor,
not a Holtzer-Cabot motor, unless you really like 1920s motor
technology.) Motors are repairable but few shops do motor
repair any more.
Note that the helical gear on the end has one twist for
a Model 15 and the opposite twist for a Model 14. Gears are
easy to remove and switch.
If the motor is turning and there's no other machine movement,
you have mechanical problems in the typing unit.
