Hi all!
This RFI issue with the CFL and some LED incandescent
replacements, are indeed a serious problem for us
radio & communications operators...
I agree, the FCC and Dep't of Industry Trade & Commerce,
(Canada), shud investigate this very troublesome
interference issue...
A few years back, I replaced most of our household
incandescent lamps with the new compact flourescent
bulbs (CFL)...
Immediate severe RFI problems, as they turned out
to be the most prolific RFI generators I have
ever encountered...
The heat factor from these units is another issue...
We had a cuple of in socket "Meltdown" issues
where there was enuf heat generated to "Seize"
the threaded portion of the bulb in the socket...
It required brute force, destroying the bulb
in the process of getting it out, the threaded
part had to be twisted out with wire cutters!
The "Newer" LED bulbs also generate tons
of heat in the plastic area just above the threads...
I find after even a few minutes of operation,
they get xtremely hot...
Some brands seem to run hotter than others,
but comparing bulb to bulb, it appears they
may be mostly manfactured in the same plants
in China...
As for RFI generation, they, the LED bulbs, can
generate a lot of RFI "Hash", some worse
than others...
In my radio/teletype room, I have replaced all
the LED bulbs, with incandescent ones,
to get rid of the RFI problem...
Interesting to note, most CFL/LED makers have
placed possible broadband interference warnings
on their packaging...
It seems we are living in a cesspool of RFI
radiation these days...
My own household plasma TV with its'
sub-field generator, completely blanks
out any of my communication receivers
when it is operating...
Even double RF ferrite chokes on the AC power
cord doesn't get rid of it...
Other prolifc RF generation sources are those
damn "Wall wort" power supplies used in so
many products now, they are transformerless,
and just blast out what seems like a 120Hz
"Buzzing" signal...
All this plus all the normal crap which seems
to invade our homes courtesy of the hydro
providers...
Good luck with dealing with this nuisance
issue...
Cheers!
Ken
