Duncan,
my recollection of the slow speed six-level circuits from the Associate Press is that the information on the circuit was already formatted for the typesetting equipment.
The AP's six level circuits were computer generated, at least at my time with the AP in the late 1970s, and all of the required spacing, allowance for justification dueto different character widths, all of that was already taken into account.
The punched tape could be read directly the typesetting equipment at the newspapers.
As I've noted, probably the last newspaper in North Carolina to use hot lead for a dailypaper was the Durham Herald-Sun, and I saw their composing room in maybe 1978and I was amazed to see they still have Linotypes which would read paper tape and set the type.

David,
A TTS perforator requires additional counting equipment to handle
set (character width) and spaceband expansion, and a way of indicating
line length ranges to the operator.
The RPE reperf provided a storage media of the news (in upper & lower
case) coming in from AP. There may have been other equipment that read
the 6-bit tape from the RPE and added the extra information before it
went to the typesetting equipment???
Glad you were able to get that 6-bit RPE reperf.
have fun,
Duncan
