I was going to make a joke answer but this is serious.
I've found that rats and mice like certain kinds of
insulation and are attracted to other things to chew that are
puzzling; for instance some paper boxes. They chew the insulation
off some types of wire and ignore others. I don't know what it is
they like. I found for baiting mouse/rat traps bread is more
effective than the traditional baits like cheese, bacon or even
peanut butter. I expect there is something in Teletype machines,
insulation perhaps, that the critters like. Also, small animals
like little caves and will get into cabinet drawers (from the
back), radio cabinets (also from the back), etc. Of course they
also like it warm but most of the rat/mouse damage I've seen was
in gear that was stored for quite a long time.
BTW, I was a a WalMart yesterday and saw (wait for it)
packaged rad/mouse food! Not poisoned bait for food for pet rats
and mice. I know people keep white mice but didn't know anyone
kept pet rats.
Maybe the rats are attracted to something known as RATT.
