    I don't see how this would work. It could be used to remove a 
glossed surface. The hardening has to do with chemical changes in 
the rubber. Probably differs depending on how it was vulcanized 
and the sort of plasticizers used. Sandblasting or just sanding 
or turning in a lathe might remove a hardened surface providing 
the rubber underneath was softer. But if the rubber has hardened 
to its depth I think it would make little or no difference.
    I really think there is no easy out if you have a really hard 
platen or a damaged platen. Not much choice other than getting it 
replaced.
