Good advise from Nick. When I am at loose ends I'm reading about teletypes.
In case you haven't found it yet, navy-radio.com has a wealth of information.
There is a lot of commonality between the 35 and the 28. So if you can't find the specific information for 35, try for the 28. Biggest difference is the number of code bars in the printer and keyboards.
If the number of documents at navy-radio is overwhelming, check https://www.blunham.com/Misc/ASR35/index.html for just model 35 documents.
Now for a simple place to start. The carriage return. Looking at the front of the printer, you'll see a couple of drums with a steel cable wrapped around them. The one on the right is the one you're interested in. The other is more or less an idler. The right one has a couple of arms that step or ratchet the drum clockwise. There is a spring that get wound up in the process. It is what sends the carriage back. If there is too much dirt and gunk on the rail the type box rides on, it won't return.
So let's go back to those arms that step the carriage to the right. When you push down on the local CR key they should be lifted off the drum so it can turn counter clockwise sending the carriage back to left. If you see the arms lifting but no return, then continue to press the local CR key and try pushing the type box carriage back to left. Hard to push? Dirt and gunk is the enemy. Goes easily, broken spring?
BTW. The area where all this stuff in attached is called the "front plate" and can be removed as a subassembly. Not necessary in most cases.
Now I'm going to try and fall asleep for a little bit until the van is ready to go the rest of the way home. (Road hazard tire blow out)

On a 28 ASR you can remove the entire keyboard and base from the cabinet and operate it on the workbench. I don’t know about the 35ASR.

Often this is merely dirt and old gunk keeping a code bar from sliding. Look at the codes and figure out how to exercise one bit at a time.

>> Thanks in advance. Also if anyone can offer some overall strategic advice about how to proceed with a 35 ASR rejuvenation I'd appreciate. This machine came with a box of parts. I can tell some parts are missing from the machine innards (like the drive to the punch unit). There's also a card missing from a card slot, etc.
