I have not seen ZZZZ used as a start of message designator. I have seen a few people in times past use ZZZZ in place of NNNN as the end of message designator, but I'm not one to know.
However, I did a bit of digging...
Try this GK thread from 2002: http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/greenkeys/2002-April/000877.html (click "Next Message" to keep following the thread).
Also: http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/greenkeys/2003-December/003175.html
And here: http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/greenkeys/2003-December/003206.html
And to remind folks, I have a GreenKeys search engine running at https://teletype.net/gksearch. Just one thing I got up and running amidst the many other things I *want* to get up and running. It's helped me find some otherwise hard to find information.
