An important thing to keep in mind is the VA rating of the transformer.
80 VA would be a safe minimum.
For example a pair of back to back 12v transformers should be rated at
1 amp @ 12 volts minimum. (making the primaries rated at 0.1 amp.)
Same thing with dual primaries.
Sometimes it's just easier to do it right instead of trying to think of
some clever way to do it wrong.
