Perhaps I was the Systems Programmer from hell....
... On the 1st of April slip a few extra cards into the IPL deck. When the
operators issue the command to start the printer the punch starts...
... Extra cards moved all the device names round....
... Also nice 9-track mag tape mini reel with tape wound on in wrong
direction. Give it to trainee ops, tell them it has something important on
like directors' expenses..
.. Normal mount procedure is to feed tape through head, wind on take up
spool so it grips. Activate vacuum. Unwind more tape so it drops into
columns, enable drive.
The drive then searches for the Beginning of Tape (BOT) marker a strip of
foil on the tape. Because tape is wound wrong way drive then gets confused
because yes the sensors
show where tape is in vacuum columns but when drive tries to adjust loop the
tape moves the wrong way.
If it tries to move the loop up the column it goes down and you get a couple
of nice creases in the tape as it hits the bottom.
If it tries to move it down it goes up and you get a nice stretched
tape.....
The big 9-track drives are awesome. A few big motors hidden in there...
