[GreenKeys] strange dovetron?

I don't think you had a lot of choice with the Dovetrons, at least any
that I have seen. I don't remember ever seeing one with the CRT.
Personally, I prefer the scope, even though most of them were even 1"
ones, just easier to tune for me, likely since my early experience with
the scopes while in the Navy. Brighter to my eye and not "blurry", like
some of the LED tuning indicators. The scope will also show you if the
shift is off, but the LED doesn't show me that. It will show if the
tones aren't balanced.
Now, thinking back, the tuning meter that HAL used and most of us
scratch builders used on Irv Hoff's early publications in Ham Radio
Magazine as well, AS LONG as the TU was set up right (ST-5AS, ST-6, etc)
and tones balanced, that 1ma meter tuning was very hard to beat. Just
tune for maximum and watch it print.
Business reality, as one poster just pointed out, drove most to the LED
display. HAL must have had a TON of the small CRT's, as they kept that
display to nearly the end, just the ST-8000A types being LED. The
ST-8000 was a larger CRT and nice too.
Nice to see the old units again. I need to get some of mine out of
storage and put them in a rack so I can play more. I have many
different ones, Dovetron, IRL, AEA, HAL, DT-600's, etc. Most of the
ones I have found in these latter years, or kept from building/buying
them "in the day". I use the ST-8000 most of the time now, but did buy
a ST-6000LT unit with MUCH better filtering as Bill was closing them out
from a defaulted commercial contract. It copies as well as the ST-8000
IMHO, but doesn't do FSK easily and I prefer that.
Opinions vary all over the board, I know. Having fun is the main
thing. I sure wish more "old time" RTTY rag chewers would get on the HF
bands more. Hard to find a good QSO like was so common in the older days.
